Winter weddings at Asylum Chapel in London
Asylum Chapel is very popular for weddings and it is easy to see why, this really is a very unique venue in Peckham with crumbling paint and beautiful stained glass under an industrial looking roof. The chapel is central to Caroline Gardens, almshouses for retired pub landlords. The chapel was bombed during the second world war causing considerable damage, later it was made watertight but sat unused until more recent times. Today Asylum Chapel makes a fabulous venue for wedding ceremonies.
Asylum Chapel is wonderful at any time of year but perhaps more so for a late afternoon wedding in winter, the last rays of winter afternoon light pour in through the windows throwing shadows and puddles of light in the chapel. Darkness then falls with the interior lit with candles.
My tips for a winter wedding at Asylum Chapel.
Wrap up warm! Asylum Chapel doesn’t have heating although a few small electric heaters are used on cold days, it does get cold in the chapel so make sure you have dress accordingly.
Make the best use of daylight. A sunset ceremony in the chapel is lovely but it does get very dark afterwards, consider timing your ceremony to make use of daylight – An hour before sunset would still give the lovely afternoon light but allows some time after the ceremony before it is totally dark.
Hire uplighters. Maverick Projects run events at the chapel and will hire out uplighters, these will make a big difference if you plan on staying after dark otherwise the chapel does get very dark.
Include hot drinks in the refreshments. Wedding guests appreciate hot drinks as well as the usual wedding drinks on a cold winter day.
Bring real petals for confetti. The only confetti allowed at Asylum Chapel is real flower petals.
